Keanu Reeves Is Not Helping Matters
Posted by The Jay under Celebrity , Keanu Reeves , Renee Zellweger , Ben Affleck
I work so hard to defend my boy. I go to exaggerated lengths to prove his worth as an actor and man. I end friendships to maintain his honor. I endanger my reputation as an entertainment humorist by writing 3000 word opuses on his merits. I do everything in my power to stop abuse. And then he goes and does something like this.
How I can continue the fight against Keanu haters when the man himself agrees to play an emotion-less space alien named Klaatu (in a remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still)? It’s like he’s asking for it! I can’t defend Renee Zellweger when she plays a dowdy shrewd who squints all the time and look perpetually bitchy. I can’t defend Ben Affleck when he does a crappy Australian accent and trails animal crackers through Liv Tyler’s non-taut belly. How can I be expected to defend Keanu when he plays the exact role all Keanu-haters claim him to be? If he’s gonna Roger Ramjet his tenuous thespian standing into a wall, he might as well go full-force and team up with McConaughey for a weed picture, or play the lead in I Am Sam 2: Whoa, Sam Is Totally I Am.
Couldn’t he just have done another weepy Sandra Bullock flick? I get that he’s remaking an exceedingly well-respected sci-fi classic. And I’m happy that the initial reception has been good. But it just does nothing for the cause. He would have been better served doing another gruff guy coaches inner-city gangbangers to the Whiffleball State Championships or whatever-type movies, where he gets to be all inspirational and shit. Sam Jackson’s practically made a side business out of those, and he’s more typecast than Keanu. At least Keanu can be bought in different genres. Sam Jackson is ALWAYS Sam Muthafuckin’ Jackson. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Here’s the word from Variety on Keanu’s totally non, non non, non non, non-heinous next movie role. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go re-watch Permanent Record and remember why I keep up the crusade.
Reeves committed over the weekend to play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar. Erwin Stoff is producing, with Scott Derrickson (”The Exorcism of Emily Rose”) directing from a script by David Scarpa. Reeves’ commitment puts the picture on track for a late fall or early 2008 production start. Studio sees it as a tentpole.
Bangarang!

Hey Jay, I know it sounds like Keanu might be jumping in the fire, but this may turn out to be a good choice from him. He’s always be great in sci-fis. He’s returning to those roots that made him famous. The original movie is considered a cult classic so maybe with today’s technology in special effects this might turn out to be a bitchin movie and give Keanu another hit. The critics will once again have to eat their words. And just for the record, this space alien isn’t emotionless..I’ve read plenty of articles about this movie and a lot of the viewers said what made the movie good was how surprisingly caring and emotional Klaatu was and they all agrred he was an interesting, very-developed character. So we’ll have to give it a chance. I’m not ashamed to say I’m a Keanu fan and love his movies and this will be another one I will support by watching it at the theater when it’s released.

Hey if these ignorant haters haven’t figured it out by now that Keanu is a great actor, then they aren’t worth convincing because they are totally clueless and brain-dead. I mean, who can honestly say he’s not a great actor after seeing his amazing perfromances in movies PERMANENT RECORD, RIVER’S EDGE, THE GIFT, THE DEVILD’S ADVOCATE and HARDBALL?
By the way, I’m excited by this news. I know it will be great movie and Keanu will be amazing in it! Have faith, Jay.

Jay, I think you’re being too paranoid. This movie may be a good thing for Keanu. He’s always been good at picking and choosing roles in the past. He picked the movie Speed but was smart enough to pass on it’s sequel. He picked The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly and Constantine which were all kick-ass movies. I believe in his choices and think this will be a good choice as well.

How did I miss this post the first time around? I haven’t heard anything on this title - is it in preproduction already?

Remakes are always iffy prospects, remakes of classic/cult classics are extremely iffy prospects.
It may have been over 50 years, but TDTESS still lives and breathes, a lot of people have invested in this thing over the decades. It may not like being remade..
Release has been pushed back, which might be a good sign. Script is going to be rewritten (may or may not be a good thing). For my .02 worth, Keanu will do fine in Michael’s shoes (similar acting styles - neither of these men were/are bad actors, they just take watching).
However.. Keanu isn’t alone in this thing - unless everyone involved is pulling in the same direction - and the studio gets behind it, I don’t plan to hold my breath

[…] the most important pop culture dates of the Fall. As much as I try to help, seriously, Keanu Reeves is just NOT helping matters. I filed a rushed, insensitive (though funny) report on the ailing health of The Butterscotch […]

Jay, come on, where’s your sense of humor ? by choosing to play Klaatu, K. IS helping matters…in his own tongue-in-cheek way… Think about it this way : no matter what , it just can’t go wrong :))
on a serious note, now : IF the script is well written, IF the approach is well thought…this remake COULD be quite an interesting one. guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

Hi, I have been on this board before a while back, maybe about a year. However, I would like to leave a few comments for everyone to ponder…considering the man of discussion.
…the movie may not please everyone, however it will be great entertainment watching, guaranteed. Give It A Chance. There will be something to learn from it, and then everyone will be back on the discussion boards right after.
I’m all for loving the man myself, as I know many of you do. Because you know why, it feels a whole lot better than taking the other route of bashing.
Finally, Keanu is more than just a shell for ‘eye candy’ you know,or for ‘googling’ your eyes at, (though there is that appeal that cannot be missed) he does have heart, he has a family, he pays bills like everyone else, he gives to charity (because of his sister).
He is not a machine, nor is he a robot, please have some respect. He is very sensitive and deep (this has been stated in more places that I can count) and he hurts just like everyone else does. He’s living his life. If you are a supporter, be there for him…if not, then don’t.
Just here sharing the love for the “KMan”. Until then, Caio!
Thank you for having me post here, Mr. Jay.
Many Blessings to All,
Ally.
